Francisca Garcia de Esparza

Francisca Benavides Garcia was born in 1835 to Ramon Garza Garcia born in 1805 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas and Maria Antonia Garcia Benavides born in 1803 in Guerrero, Tamaulipas. Her parents were able to purchase land in San Pedro Carricitos grant from families that decided to leave. Francisca would inherit a portion of this land and she and her husband, Carlos Esparza, with this addition to their ranch were the largest land owners in San Pedro Carricitos. Francisca died in 1914 and the ranch was passed to their 5 sons and 3 daughters. Their sons all raised families on the ranch. Carlos, Francisca, their children and their spouses are buried in the Esparza Cemetery in El Ranchito, on Hwy 281 west of Brownsville, Texas.

He married FRANCISCA BENAVIDES GARCIA 30 Jan 1850 in Immaculate Conception Church, ,Brownsville, Texas, daughter of RAMON GARCIA and MARIA BENAVIDES. She was born Abt 1834 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and died 21 Feb 1914 La Encantada Ranch, Cameron Cty, TX.
Notes for CARLOS VILLARREAL ESPARZA:
Carlos Esparza had been running La Encantada Ranch since before his father, Pedro's death. Carlos was a good business man and a shrewd politician. During and after the Mexican American War he joined with Juan Cortina, another land owner in the area, to help the Mexican Americans protect their land from the new settlers coming from the north. When the war ended the Treaty Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed by the Mexican & U S. governments guaranteed the Mexican settlers to keep their land but many settlers from the United States wanted this land and tried to force the Mexican land owners back across the Rio Grande River into Mexico. The larger land owners and the " Cortinistas" tried to organize and help the smaller owners protect their land. Though many lost their land and left the area the "Cortinistas" succeeded in protecting La Encantada Ranch and other ranches in the area. Carlos continued to manage the ranch until his father, Pedro's death in about 1879. La Encantada was then divided by the heirs of Pedro and Felicidad. Carlos inherited 1/6th of the ranch from his parents. He also purchased the 1/6th inheritance of each of his two sisters Candalaria and Inez giving him one half of La Encantada Ranch. Carlos continued ranching on his portion of the land where he and his wife Francisca Garcia raised their family.
Carlos was a philosopher whose dichos have survived to this day. They were published in a book by R & E Research Associates, Inc. 4843 Mission Street, San Francisco. California 94112. The author of the 123 page book "Carlos Esparza: a Chicano Chronicle " is Carlos Larralde. Carlos Larralde is a member of the Esparza family through Francisca Esparza Montalvo (daughter of Jose Garcia Esparza & Rufina Sayas).

San Pedro, Texas

SAN PEDRO, TEXAS (Cameron County). San Pedro, formerly known as Santander, is located on U.S. Highway 281 where it crosses the Rancho Viejo Floodway in southern Cameron County. The site was part of the San Pedro de Carricitos land grant. The community was a station on the San Benito and Rio Grande Valley Railway in 1928 and as early as 1948 had a church and a school. In 1983 there were numerous dwellings, a school, and a church in San Pedro. By 1976 a coloniaqv in the area had 149 dwellings and an estimated population of 792. In 1986 the colonia comprised twenty-four acres, eighty dwellings, and a population of 360.

San Pedro de Carricitos

"San Pedro de Carricitos" land grant consisted of 12,730.59 acres in Cameron County. It was granted by Mexico, October 30, 1833. Pedro Bouchard applies for himself and Ramon Garcia for the heirs of Matias Garcia and the heirs of Jose Maria Villarreal and the heirs of Miguel Cabazos for three leagues originally granted to Pedro Villarreal in 1784. Witnesses prove occupation, cultivation and pasturage of said tract for many years prior to March 2, 1836, and never heard of any adverse claimants. All the papers and other documents formerly presented to the Board were lost by shipwreck. Recommended. Confirmed by the Legislature, Act of February 10, 1852. Decree of District Court of Cameron County, January 24, 1872, in file: Pedro Esparza et al. v. Sabas Cabazos and Damacio Cantu; Felipe Trevino et al., intervenors. Felipe Trevino and Carmen Trevino recover from plaintiffs and defendants all lands described in intervenors' petition...to be divided in three parts between [those named].

1. JUAN NEPOMUCENO GOSEASCOCHEA2 CORTINA (TRINIDAD1) was born 16 May 1824 in Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and died 30 Oct 1894 in Mexico City, Mexico. He married (1) DOLORES GOSEASCOCHEA TIJERINA 01 Jul 1846 in Matamoros ,Tamaulipas, Mexico, daughter of JUAN TIJERINA and FELICIANA GOSEASCOCHEA. She was born Abt 1830 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, and died Abt 1847, no issue. He married (2) RAFAELA CORTEZ Jan 1850 in Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas. He married (3) MARIA JESUS LOPEZ Abt 1853.
Notes for JUAN NEPOMUCENO GOSEASCOCHEA CORTINA:
Juan N Cortina was the famous Mexican general that stood up for the rights of his people after the Mexican American War. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed by both countries granting all the Mexican people north of the Rio Grande the right to keep their land as long as they were occupying it. This was a bitter time along the river. Many Mexican people left because of threats from the new Anglo settlers, but many fought for their rights and stayed on their land. It was Cortina that organized the ranchers so they could protect their land. This group of ranchers were called the "Cortinistas".
Juan Cortina returned to Mexico where he died. He stilll has family living on the land his ancestors recieved as Spanish land grantees.
